Ms. Matchy Bridesmaid Dresses… Yay or Nay?

7 Mar

Back to the bridesmaid dress conundrum.  Decisions, decisions, decisions.  The wedding is outdoor and in the summer so ideally I’d like something flowy, whimsical, romantic, breezy…

A growing trend is dresses that aren’t the same and all mismatched.

Sometimes I think it’s absolutely lovely

&

sometimes I think it looks jumbled and blah

Pros:  Bridesmaids can get their own dresses (budget friendly!) or wear one if they already have one that fits the mold.

Cons: There’s no guarantee that it’ll end up looking amazing??

I’m SO in LOOOOOVE with this very sweet vintage look below

What are you thoughts?

Yay or Nay?

Well, since you asked, here’s what I would do. First of all, I’d ask my bridesmaids for their input, with the understanding that I had final approval. I like the idea of non-matching, as long as everyone is on the same page color and style wise. You could specify pastel, and long or short.

On the other hand, matching is nice too, if you choose a style that’s simple and basically flattering to just about anyone. If it were me, I don’t know that I’d even be looking in the bridesmaid section for dresses (sure to cost more). I’d be checking out simple, unadorned sundresses. Just a thought.

Okay, I could have said just yay or nay, but I have a hard time keeping things simple. ;o) One thing I’ve never understood is why the bride doesn’t pay for the bridesmaids dresses? It just doesn’t seem fair that the bride asks her friends to be in her wedding, then it’s “buy your own dresses, shoes, etc.” It’s like asking someone for a favor, then charging them for it!

I’ve thought a lot about this as I am planning my wedding. I think it’s important to ask your bridesmaids what they think but ultimately it depends on the style you’re looking to go for as well as the number of bridesmaids you have. You want to feel comfortable looking back on your pictures and how your girls look. Personally I decided to go with my girls all wearing the same dress but I also made sure that the dress was affordable for everyone’s budget. I am sure all of your bridesmaids are happy to stand up with you and will be happy with whatever you decide.

Being (very) old school, matching looks better to me, all long and more formal. For the sake of your long-treasured photographs would this more “stand the test of time”? The vintage sample is really complimentary too. Come to think of it though, old wedding photos seen from the 50’s, e.g., look pretty stiff.
